Australia’s Kimberley region is the ultimate destination for adventure tourists.
Remote locations, challenging 4WD routes, long distance walking trails, thrilling speed boat rides or swimming in croc infested waters (with a cage) are just some of the available adventures.
Experience Australia’s outback at its best with our list of favourite activities guaranteed to take you off the beaten track, give you a new appreciation of the Broome-Kimberley region and get your heart racing.
Feel the Need for Speed
Fly over the Buccaneer Archipelago before landing at Horizontal Falls for an exhilarating high-speed boat ride over the waterfall.
Horizontal Falls are a unique natural feature where the tidal waterfalls within the bay flow horizontally. This is one of the greatest natural wonders of the world.
Massive tidal currents flow through two narrow coastal gorges where boats can zip between to the bay behind.
Once you’ve finished speeding over the water, why not take a dip in it? Experience the thrill of swimming in a crocodile/shark free cage. You can also feed the more-friendly fish inhabitants of the bay.
Reel in a Great Catch
If you prefer catching fish rather than swimming with them, get aboard a Kimberley fishing cruise.
Offering some of the best fishing in the world, you’ll see spectacular scenery in various remote locations. The waters are teeming with a variety of fish species including Barramundi and Salmon.
Expert guides will take you to the best fishing spots and show you the secrets to reeling-in a great catch.
Available cruises vary from four to seven nights and usually run in October and November when the Barramundi are biting.
High Adrenaline Heli Fishing
If you like your fishing adventures a little more high adrenaline, consider a heli fishing tour.
A helicopter pilot will fly you to some of the most remote and difficult to access fishing spots where you’re sure to reel in a boast-worthy Barramundi. Your pilot or fishing guide can help you fillet your fish to take back and eat for dinner.
Heli fishing tours can be taken from Broome or the spectacular El Questro station, a vast wilderness area with plenty of secret fishing spots to discover.
Fly Over Massive Falls
Get your camera out and capture the impressive Mitchell Falls as you fly over them in a helicopter. It’s one of the best ways to see and capture the falls, but be warned, no photo can truly capture their magnificence. This is a must-see adventure tour.
You can also see the falls as part of most Kimberly Cruises, take a self-drive tour to Drysdale Station or get a scenic flight from Kununurra or Broome.

Hit the RoadWhether you drive the iconic Gibb River Road, tackle the rollercoaster track through Purnululu National Park to the Bungle Bungles or explore the rugged ranges of stations like El Questro, the Kimberley is 4WD heaven with rough roads, river crossings and plenty of great views. The Gibb River Road is one of the most famous and unique 4WD experiences in Australia, covering 660 kilometres between Derby and Kununurra, through the heart of one of the last true wilderness areas on Earth. The road is accessible between May and October.
Saddle Up for an Outback Experience
Join adventurous horse treks across working cattle properties at El Questro or Home Valley stations.
Stockmen and women provide riding instructions before you set off along stock routes or trails across rugged landscapes.
Overnight horse treks are available. Explore both Home Valley and El Questro stations taking in the Cockburn Range, ancient Boab trees, crystal clear waterholes and Zebedee Hot Springs. The treks run in May and June each year.
Take a Hiking Tour
From short walks to long treks there’s a range of impressive trails that can be accessed during a cruise or from visits to wilderness retreats such as Faraway Bay.
On a King George River cruise, climb to the top of the King George Falls for a breathtaking view of the river below and get a different perspective on the incredible landscape.
