Northern Territory Indigenous Tours
Northern Territory Indigenous Tours is a wholly indigenous-owned, locally based, family business offering specialized, expert interpretation of the natural and cultural environment from an Aboriginal viewpoint.
Owner and head guide Tess Atie is a local Aboriginal woman born in Darwin. Tess grew up travelling and camping with her family on their country to the south-west of Darwin. Sometimes she stayed at Wollaning Springs, near Wangi Falls with her Grandparents and other times she stayed at Blyth Homestead with her aunty. From a young age, Tess learnt about the flora and fauna of the Top End by travelling with her family and learnt the very fine details of how plants and animals live, and how everything fits into the cultural side of things from her many relatives. Tess studied Lands, Parks and Wildlife Management at Northern Territory University and worked for several years as a park ranger. Now Tess runs Northern Territory Indigenous Tours and has a wonderful time showing and teaching her guests about her family’s beautiful country and about Aboriginal life in the old days and today. Tess is currently training other local Aboriginal guides to lead tours to help them create a livelihood and to benefit their self-esteem.
