For those planning a trip to the Kimberley at some stage during the year, here we take you through what dates to keep in mind when booking cruises, tours and accommodation to avoid disappointment.
If you’re thinking of travelling to Broome or Darwin during the July school holidays – a popular travel date for many families – and you’re looking to stay at family accommodation like the bungalows at Cable Beach Club or apartment style hotels, you should be booking these by the end of January.
If you’ve left it a little late and can’t find a hotel available for your entire stay, consider splitting your time between two or more destinations – for example Broome, then Eco Beach or Cape Leveque. The kids will enjoy the adventure of staying in a few different places and getting to experience more destinations!
With cruises being one of the most popular, and most breathtaking, ways to see the Kimberley, it’s no surprise they book up fast! Kimberley Cruises should be booked a year in advance, particularly for travel in May, June and July (the most popular months for cruise tours).
For last minute availability, March, early April and September are usually the quietest months as they border on the end and beginning of the wet season, so favourable weather is not always guaranteed. However, they have their benefits too. March and April are the best times to see the waterfalls in full-effect as they are filled with wet season water, and September gives you a chance to see the whales migrating.
If you want your trip to coincide with popular events in the Broome and Kimberley region, like the Broome Cup or the Kimberley Moon event at the Ord Valley Muster, tickets to these events, as well as travel and accommodation, are best booked at least six months in advance.
Gibb River Road Self-Drive
Self-drives along the Gibb River Road are best booked in December and January for travelling in peak months (June-August). But again, for late-comers there’s usually space in September and October for late bookings, but bear in mind the weather can be favourable for driving and sight-seeing as the wet season draws closer.
Extended Kimberley tours that are running during peak season usually fill up by February.
Private tours tour companies have a small number of vehicles and staff and fill up far in advance. Book a year in advance to get your preferred dates.
Kimberley Day Tours
Kimberley Day Tours such as Cable Beach camel rides and tours to Litchfield National Park should always be pre-booked, and bear in mind that during busy times, these will be fully booked up to two weeks in advance. We recommend booking day trips as far in advance as when you’re booking your holiday – firstly to ensure that you don’t miss out, but also because some tours run on minimum numbers and will encourage people to book on your chosen date to get a confirmed tour.
