Mackerel Islands

Self-Contained Accommodation
Thevenard Island

Whether you’re seeking a family holiday, a group getaway, a castaway-style adventure or a romantic retreat, you’ll find your ideal escape at the Mackerel Islands. Scattered 22km off the coast of Onslow in Western Australia, two of these ten pristine islands and atolls welcome guests – Thevenard Island with a choice of beachfront cabins.

A range of activities and tours have been designed to captivate and entertain you during your stay, from marine-based snorkelling, fishing, turtle and whale watching, kayaking and stand up paddle boarding, to land-based 4WD sunset trips, bird watching, beachcombing, beach sports and stargazing.

Chevron Thevenard Island Decommissioning: During 2020 Chevron has made great progress in removing their old camp, offices, pipelines and other infrastructure. In 2021 the iconic oil storage tanks and remaining infrastructure will also be decommissioned, allowing site rehabilitation to commence. If work is occurring during your stay, there may be a noticeable increase in marine activity (barge loading and unloading) nearby the beachfront cabins. Barge operations will generate engine noises and restrict access to the island jetty area while loading is occurring. There may also be heavy machinery operating in the neighbouring lease area, and travelling to and from the jetty during the day. The Club Thevenard area including the bar, restaurant and swimming pool will be unavailable. An alternative beach location has been set up for our Dinner Under the Stars evenings.

Rooms

Stay in a range of 2 and 3 bedroom beachfront cabins overlooking the Indian Ocean, each one combining basic home comforts with tasteful simplicity. Spaced along the beach overlooking the boat moorings and swimming bay, the Beachfront Cabins are completely self-contained and positioned to provide privacy. They offer the basics of civilisation including air conditioning, mood lighting and comfortable beds. All cabins are powered by solar and have fresh drinking water.

Facilities

Designed for relaxation, the cabins feature a kitchen, dining and lounge. Your outdoor entertaining area is the perfect place to enjoy a BBQ, taking in the island’s wildlife and spectacular ocean views after a day of adventure.

Visit the island’s tour and activity centre to hire out equipment or book a tour, join a Dinner Under The Stars casual social event, use the guest laundry, or shop at the island general store.

Dining

If you are staying on Thevenard Island, you will need to bring your own groceries (excluding alcohol) to self-cater. The beachfront cabins each have a Weber BBQ and a kitchen with a stovetop, oven, microwave, full size fridge/freezer, toaster, kettle, Nespresso coffee machine, plus pots, pans, crockery, cutlery, glassware and utensils.

What To Expect

Thevenard Island, nestled among coral reefs and visited by incredible marine life like sea turtles, dolphins, whales, colourful fish, tropical crayfish and stingrays, is an amazing, off the beaten track experience. Go snorkelling directly from the beach, jump on a kayak or SUP board, hire a boat and cruise around the bay, stargaze in awe while soaking up the quietness, or join our skipper on one of our sensational fishing charters.
