While its star attraction is undoubtedly the famous Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge), Katherine and its surrounds include great fishing, hidden natural wonders and a rich history. The Katherine River flows through 13 separate gorges and you can canoe, cruise and swim between sheer cliffs to the sandy freshwater beaches of the main gorges, and view ancient Aboriginal rock paintings high on the rock faces. Waterfalls and rock pools are found along the 100 kilometres of walking tracks in the Park.
Whilst in Katherine, you also might like to visit the School of the Air (open Monday to Friday April to December, entry fee applies), or the Katherine Hot Springs for a refreshing dip. These natural thermal springs are located just 5 minutes from town on the banks of the Katherine River.
Distances from Katherine: Darwin 315km, Kununurra 512km, Alice Springs 1175km.
Take a 15 minute drive south to Cutta Cutta Caves (open daily from 8.30am to 4.30pm, entry fees apply) or travel further south to the famous Mataranka Thermal Pool (approx 1 hour from Katherine). Alternatively, Edith Falls, located 50kms north of Katherine is a great day out for swimming, bush walking and a picnic.
