Christmas Island

Christmas Island is a paradise brimming with unique wildlife amongst jungles and surrounded by pristine reefs. Known best for the unique annual red crab migration, when millions of crabs make their way down from the jungle to the ocean to spawn. It is an island that many have heard of but few have visited.

The dates of the red crab migration vary yearly with the moon and tide cycles but it generally occurs around the months of October to January. However you will still be able to spot them along with the giant robber crabs year round.

Whale sharks are often spotted  from November to April when diving or snorkelling . With year round water temperatures of 27⁰C  it is perfect to snorkel and dive all year. The reefs and corals are in a great condition, brightly coloured marine fish are in abundance, large pods of spinner dolphins are often seen by snorkelers and divers year round along with some of the bigger pelagics.

There is plenty to see on land, with winding trails through the rainforest and lookouts which are perfect for spotting birds such as frigatebirds, boobies and the golden bosun. There are caves to explore on the island, some with easier access than others. The island attracts keen photographers with bright colours and rugged coastline and wildlife. There is also a golf course with special Christmas Island rules about red crabs blocking the holes.

Head to Dolly Beach, which made #7 in 101 Best Australian Beaches. You'll need to hire a 4WD or join a tour to get there, but it's well worth it with jungle lining the sand, rock pools to explore and robber crabs and nesting turtles to spot.

We have a wide range of accommodations to suit all requirements and would be happy to discuss your requirements.

Taking tours is a great way to become familiar with the Island. We would recommend pre booking tours due to the small tour sizes to keep the tours more personalised and informative.

2017 Red Crab Migration

The annual migration is a natural phenomenon which relies on the rain, moon and tides all coming together. For 2017, it's predicted to occur around the 13th of December.
