The breathtaking coastline of Australia’s North is like no other place. Barely untouched for centuries, it’s dramatic limestone cliffs, calm turquoise waters, picturesque archipelagos and stunning waterfalls, provide a miraculous backdrop to a cruise holiday. Only a Kimberley cruise can get you this close to untamed wildlife, remote swimming holes, secret fishing spots and indigenous rock art sites that are inaccessible by any other means.
The Kimberley Cruise wilderness experience
Exploring an ancient land, 2000 million years in the making, is an awe-inspiring experience. The landscapes of the Kimberley and Top End are amongst some of the oldest natural structures on earth. Dramatic gorges, river systems abundant with wildlife and exotic fauna, and secluded ancient rock art sites are just a few of the unique experiences of this region. Combine fishing for prized Barramundi, savouring Kimberley mud crabs and fresh rock oysters, pristine quiet and vast open skies, and you have the perfect ingredients for a holiday that will leave you spellbound.
A land of two of seasons..
The Kimberley & the Top End of Australia is a semi-tropical region experiencing two distinct seasons; the dry season, between the months of April through to September, enjoys daytime temperatures in the low 30’s and cool starry nights. The wet season occurs during the months of October through to March. Monsoonal rain generally arrives from December through to March, replenishing the parched ranges and bringing torrents of water in cascading waterfalls. This time of year enjoys spectacular thunderstorms and breathtaking sunsets and the barramundi are on the bite. Humidity can be high with daytime temperatures often in the mid 30’s with balmy nights.
Best time to go
The start of the dry season from April to June is the best time to experience a Kimberley cruise as the waterfalls and gorges are fresh and bountiful after the wet season rains. This is also the perfect time to visit Broome and Darwin, with some fantastic accommodation deals and packages available. However any time between April to October will be perfect for you to join a Kimberley cruise.
Choosing a vessel
Choosing a vessel for your Kimberley Wilderness Cruise is all about personal preference. The larger vessels offer a traditional cruise experience, including formal dining and large public areas, choices of bars, and theatrettes, with onboard lecturers to provide an insight into the landscape, history and culture of the region. Excursions are undertaken by expedition tenders. Smaller vessels offer an intimate experience with nature, crew and guests. Many of the vessels can navigate the tidal river tributaries to provide the extraordinary experience of a cascading waterfall over the bow, whilst offering a level of comfort and onboard services to meet individual expectations.
Is a Wilderness Cruise for me?
Relaxation is a fundamental component of a Kimberley Wilderness cruise. Enjoying the onboard facilities of the vessels and the joy of the natural surrounds will suit travellers of any age and fitness level. Excursions are not compulsory, but should you wish to participate, walking and some climbing will be required to reach secluded art sites and secret swimming holes. Fishing is more frequently available on the smaller vessels.
