Are you feeling lucky?? Broome is a hotspot for horse racing events from June to August, with racing events occurring almost every weekend during racing season. So why visit Broome during racing season? What makes Broome racing great? And what else can you see and do during your trip? We have the answers!
Broome Racing is a unique eventThe location alone is inimitable. Gantheaume Point is right on the western-most tip of the Broome region, with the Indian Ocean surrounding you on three sides. Then you have the red dirt race track and the member’s area being a big tin shed.
And if you really want to make the most of the local flavour, make sure you stay after the final race for a game of two up.
The town is buzzing
Everyone who’s anyone flies into Broome for the racing season! You’ll mix and mingle with Broome locals, Perth socialites and Kimberley station workers heading to the big smoke for the races! The town is abuzz with a great atmosphere with everyone from young to old in high spirits.
Music and Entertainment
If you’re not into putting money on the ponies that’s ok too – there’s still plenty of attractions in Broome during racing season!
There are always plenty of musicians performing around race days. Every pub and restaurant in the town will have bands and performers in the evenings.
Broome music event ‘Cable Sounds’ also takes place at the same time as the Kimberley Cup (Saturday 8th august this year) and you can always expect a great headliner at the Roebuck Bay Hotel (The Roey to locals).
With the assortment of people attending, you can’t get a better people watching perch than a seat at the Broome races! You’ll see those really pushing the ‘Kimberley Casual’ card (some even in their high-vis best!) next to women (and men) wearing thousands of dollars’ worth of Broome pearls, every race brings out a great mix of people. Grab a drink and watch the world go by!
Escape the cold
While the rest of us are shivering in winter, the Broome Races are on during Broome’s dry season while Broome is sunny and warm, often a balmy 30+ degrees! So whether it’s after a day of racing or you want to skip the races altogether, the weather is perfect for relaxing on nearby Cable Beach!
You could even take a Broome day tour out to see the pearl farms, visit Cape Leveque or see the Horizontal Waterfalls.
Broome really has so much to offer – the races are just the icing on the cake!
