Broome's 'Festival of the Pearl'

From the high spirited and colourful waking of Sammy the Dragon, the festivals Chinese Dragon, after his year long slumber; across ten days of festivity, Broome’s Shinju Matsuri is an experience like no other.

Shinju Matsuri, which translates from Japanese as ‘Festival of the Pearl’ began in 1970 when local community leaders wanted to best mark several of the town’s celebrations that occurred close together, including the Japanese Obon, Malaysian Merdeka the Chinese Hang Seng at the end of Broomes pearl harvest.

For 42 years the festival is held every year around August or Septembers full moon and spring tides to coincide with the beautiful natural phenomenon know as ‘Staircase to the Moon’.

This year join in as Broome comes to life through festivities that showcase traditional and contemporary talents that celebrate its unique culture, history and diversity.

Dine in style at the ‘Long Table Broome Fusion Lunch’, kick up your heels at the ‘Shinju Ball’, sample local delicacies at the historic ‘Pearl Meat Cook Off’ and join the fun of the ‘Street Float Parade’ and the ‘Mardi Gras’.
